Picture of Hagia Sophia - Byzantine Sarcophagus

A small Byzantine sarcophagus in the outer narthex of the Hagia Sophia.

Originally located in the Church of the Pantocrator (now Zeyrek Camii) in Constantinople, this sarcophagus held the remains of the Empress Irene, wife of Emperor John II Comnenus (1118-1143 AD).

The empress and emperor can be seen in this Hagia Sophia mosaic.
