Megalopsychia Mosaic Border: Palace and Church
Part of the border of the Megalopsychia Hunt Mosaic, which depicts a "day in the life" of fifth-century Antioch and Daphne and provided a guided tour from one to the other. This section of the border is on the left side as you face the Megalopsychia from the point of view seen here.
This portion depicts the island in the Orontes river in Antioch. On the left a rider exercises his horse on a track lined with evergreen trees, probably the emperor's private track in the imperial palace. Adjoining the track is the palace, which has a colonnade on its upper story. Before it stands a column with a statue on top.
The structure on the right is the octagonal Great Church of Constantine, surrounded by a colonnade. At the right is a figure in the attitude of prayer.
450-75 AD, Yakto village near Daphne. Antakya Museum, inv. 1016. Information from Glanville Downey, Ancient Antioch (1963), illustration 50.
