Meander Frieze of Shepherd Playing a Flute

antioch-artifacts-photos: Frieze of Shepherd (frieze-shepherd-flute.jpg, 479 x 600, 84.6K)

Meander frieze of shepherd playing a flute and a female figure, from the Church of Seleucia Pieria, c.525-50 AD. A computer reconstruction shows the original multicolor decoration.

"The bas-relief and the champlevé carvings [of the Seleucia Pieria church] are of great interest because they form the only extant program of Christian figural sculptures found at Antioch and because such a variety of themes from the Old and the New Testaments are represented." (Susan Boyd in Antioch: The Lost Ancient City).

Princeton Art Museum, inv. c671-S691.
