The Islamic Cultural Foundation or Big Mosque of Geneva was founded by King Faisal of Saudi Arabia and opened on June 1, 1979.
The traditionally-inspired but modern building has a glass roof, which lets in plenty of light to the main prayer hall (but can also be electronically covered for other purposes). There are four colonnaded corridors surrounding the prayer hall. The interior is decorated with tiled mosaic and carved stone by Moroccan craftsmen.
The mosque also includes a gallery for women's prayer, a conference room, a library, classrooms, and a mortuary. Five daily prayers, the Friday sermon, Arabic language courses for children and adults, and conferences all take place here. Up to 2,000 Muslims regularly attend the Friday service.
