Tucked away in a virtually unspoiled (and less touristed) part of Toledo is the Iglesia de San Román, a fascinating 13th-century Mudéjar church.

What to See

San Roman's tall Mudéjar tower, with two bell openings in the top level and blind arches beneath, originally stood apart from the main church in the manner of Muslim minarets.

Inside, Moorish and Christian elements - including a horseshoe arches and a Renaissance dome - combine to make this perhaps the most interesting church in Toledo.

Nearly all the interior walls are covered in colorful Romanesque murals, including portraits of archbishops and a depiction of the Last Judgment.

The Church of San Román has been deconsecrated and now houses the Museo de Arte Visigótico. The collection of Visigothic artifacts includes statuary, illuminated manuscripts, and gold and silver treasures.
