Roman Sites

About 2,000 years ago, the Romans ruled most of the known western world. Clearly good at conquering people, the Romans also showed an impressive talent for building cities. Every city from England to Egypt received the distinctive Roman stamp: baths, forums, arches, aqueducts, walls, roads... and, equally important, temples. The pragmatic Romans were not known for their religious sensibilities. However, a rich Roman religious tradition developed from the Romans' willingness to absorb the indigenous faiths of conquered lands. "Roman religion" is a combination of Roman state cults, Greek mythology and philosophy, mystery religions of the East, religious ideas from exotic Egypt and Persia, and the widespread techniques of magic and superstition. This category includes the Roman cities, Roman ruins, Roman museums, and Roman sites of interest that have been profiled on Sacred Destinations so far, naturally with special attention paid to Roman temples.
