The Renaissance Westerkerk (West Church) in Amsterdam boasts the tallest tower in the city and contains the tomb of Rembrandt.
History
Construction on the Westerkerk began in 1620, at the same time as the Noorderkerk, and opened in 1631. The initial designer was Hendrick de Keyser, whose son Pieter took over after his father's death in 1621.
In 1966, Princess (now Queen) Beatrix and Prince Claus were married in the Westerkerk.
What to See
The exterior, of dark brick and creamy marble with large windows, is quite beautiful. The bright and spacious interior features a large wooden canopy over the pulpit and a fine organ, as well as the tombs of the artist Rembrandt and his son, Titus.
The 85m (277-ft.) tower, the Westertoren, is Amsterdam's tallest. The 186 steps can be climbed on a guided tour, providing fantastic views of the city. For extra excitment, it sways a bit when it's windy. The tower is topped with the blue, red, and gold imperial crown of the Holy Roman Empire, given by the Austrian emperor Maximilian.
