San Giovanni degli Eremeti (St. John of the Hermits) is a 12th-century Norman church in Palermo, Sicily, with five, Arab-inspired red domes.
History
San Giovanni degli Eremeti was founded in 1132 and dedicated to St. John of the Hermits. Built on the grounds of a mosque, its architecture reflects Islamic traditions.
What to See
Located on the western edge of the Albergheria district, San Giovanni is characterized by bulbous red domes (similar to those at La Cataldo), corner arches, and filigreed windows.
Nearby is a late Norman cloister (part of the Benedictine monastery that once stood here), which centers on a Moorish cistern and cooling gardens of citrus blossoms and flowers.
