In the main square in the heart of Eisleben's Old Town (see map) stands the large Lutherdenkmal (Luther Monument). Every "Lutherstadt" (Luther City) in Germany has a Luther monument, but they are all unique.
History
The Romantic-era statue in Eisleben was sculpted by Profesor Rudolf Siemerig and dedicated on the occasion of the 400th birthday of Martin Luther in 1883.
What to See
In one Luther cradles a Bible; in the other he roughly clutches his papal bull of excommunication (which he ceremonially burned in Wittenberg).
The four sides of the pedestal carry stone reliefs depicting scenes from Martin Luther's life:
- Luther searching the Scriptures
- Luther discussing theology with his close friend Philipp Melanchthon
- Luther at home, singing hymns with his family
- The triumph of truth (shown as an angel) over the devil
