Eisenach

Eisenach is a small town on the northwestern slopes of the Thuringian Forest, 48km (30 miles) west of Erfurt.

Once a center of the East German auto industry, Eisenach is not as charming as some other German cities, but it does have one of the region's finest castles and half-timbered houses ring its ancient market square.

Most visitors come to Eisenach for its historical significance: Martin Luther lived here in the 16th century — first in town at the Lutherhaus and later in disguise as "Knight George" in the Wartburg Castle — and Bach was born here.

Sacred Sites & Religious Places Georgenkirche Martin Luther was a choir boy at St. George's Church and later preached here 1521; Bach was baptized here in 1685. Lutherhaus (Luther's House) This is where Martin Luther lived as a schoolboy from 1498 to 1501. The half-timbered house preserves the two rooms used by Luther and displays Reformation artifacts. Wartburg Castle This imposing castle, a symbol of German identity and a World Heritage Site, is where Luther lived in hiding and translated the German Bible.
