American Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, Paris
The American Cathedral of the Holy Trinity (more commonly known as the American Cathedral in Paris) was consecrated in 1886 as a place of worship for American Episcopalians of Paris. This was the same time the Statue of Liberty, a gift from France to the United States, was being built.
Designed by George Edmund Street, best known for the London Law Courts, the American Cathedral is "is one of Europe's finest examples of Gothic Revival architecture" (according to Frommer's).
American decorative touches are found throughout the cathedral, including needlepoint kneelers depicting the 50 state flowers and the 50 state flags displayed in the nave.
Notable artworks include a triptych altarpiece showing the Crucifixion, Nativity and Resurrection of Christ; the 17th-century Icon of the Annunciation; and a replica of the Black Madonna of Czestochowa.
The Memorial Cloister commemorates Americans who died in Europe in World War I and all the victims of World War II.
Documentation on the cathedral's features is provided in several languages within the church. The cathedral is an active church, with weekday and Sunday worship services in English and a focus on community outreach. There are about 400 registered members.
