Church of St. Foy, Conques

Detail of the Last Judgment Tympanum (1107-25) over the west door. A wealthy knight gets his just deserts in hell. Representing the vice of pride, this also depicts the well-known local tale of Rainon, lord of the chateau of Aubin in Rouergue. The story goes that Rainon was wealthy, proud and arrogant (his chain mail shown here is very expensive) and had been excommunicated for mistreating monks. He was about to treat another one violently...
