Chartres Stained Glass #17: Zodiac Window
The Zodiac Window is a charming window dating from c. 1220 that illustrates the Zodiacs and Labors of the Months, a popular medieval theme representing the cycle of earthly life. For each sign of the zodiac it shows a corresponding activity of local peasants during that month. As usual, the donors are shown at the bottom and the rest of the window is read from the bottom up. The labors are shown in medallions on the left and the zodiacs in medallions on the right; the quatrefoils in the center are split down the middle and have one of each.
