Chartres Stained Glass #1: Jesse Window
The Jesse Window is the right lancet window (as seen from the inside) beneath the west rose. It was made around 1150 and survived the 1194 fire of the earlier cathedral. It depicts the Tree of Jesse, an abbreviated vertical view of the royal ancestory of Christ based on the prophecy of Isaiah: "there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots" (Isaiah 11:1). The seven doves around Christ represent the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit. The prophets are those who foretold the coming of Christ.
